Extracts from the Saint-Jean: Es ist Vollbracht, Ruht Wohl, choral final
With Marguerite Louise
In 1707, Johann Sebastian Bach, a young organ virtuoso, moved to Mühlhausen. First cantatas, masterstrokes! Largely borrowed from Schütz’s or Buxtehudes ancient style, these cantatas-chorales also illustrate young Bach’s total emancipation from his fathers. Young Bach constantly reinvents an extraordinarily varied writing, with a dazzlingly rich sound, awakening all the states of the listener’s (at the time, the faithful’s!) soul.
